BMW Early History

The company was founded in 1916 as Bayerische Flugzeug-Werke and produced aircraft engines. It later changed its name to Bayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works), the acronym of BMW.

It wasn’t until 1928, that the brand released its first car, the BMW 3/15, which was rebadged "Dixi." After World War II, the company moved towards the luxury vehicle market. In 1962, the BMW New Class, a compact sedan, was introduced. The 1500 model reintroduced BMW and improved its reputation.

The 1960s saw BMW grow exponentially with new lineups of coupe and sedans. It launched the “New Six” sedans in 1968, including the 2500, 2800, American Bavaria, and coupes 2.5 CS and 2800 CS, to a roaring success. By 1971, the brand had moved its headquarters to Munich, where it’s still located.

Modern History

In the 1970s, the BMW Group launched the M Series through the BMW Motorsport (later BMW M) subsidiary, offering high-performance vehicles.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, BMW continued to produce luxury coupes and sedans. From the BMW 7 Series to the X Series, BMW used its impressive lineup of luxury sedans to cross borders and reach new markets, including North America. It retained the iconic kidney grille in almost every model.

Around this time, the company began using the Ultimate Driving Machine slogan, which still aptly describes the brand’s beautiful yet performance-centric vehicles.

By the end of the 20th century, BMW had become a force to be reckoned with, acquiring the Rover Group and, with the BMW X5, entering the sport utility vehicle market.

Transition to Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (EVs)

Fast forward to 2010, and BMW has already dipped its toes in hybrid technology with ActiveHybrid 7. Three years later, the company revealed its first EV, the BMW i3, which is now part of the growing i Series of EVs.

In the last decade alone, BMW has focused on innovation, from TwinPower Turbo in gas and diesel vehicles for increased efficiency to EfficientDynamics for controlling emissions.

With BMW ConnectedDrive, you can connect devices and utilize intuitive features to get more control over your vehicle. BMW vehicles are powered by German engineering and classy designs that deliver the ultimate driving pleasure on the road.

BMW Maintenance Schedule

While BMW offers stellar performance, it requires timely maintenance and care to do so. Generally, BMW vehicles require engine oil and filter changes every year or 10,000 miles. That’s relatively higher compared to many other brands.

The fuel filters should be inspected and replaced if needed every 20,000 miles. Its brake fluid can last 30,000 miles or three years. Once replaced for the first time, it can be changed every 60,000 miles.

As for transmission fluid, manual BMWs require a fluid change at 60,000 miles or six years, whichever comes first. Inspecting engine air filters, brake pads, and rotors is recommended at every service.

At 90,000 miles, you should replace timing belts and hoses.

BMW warranty can last up to 50,000 miles, so it’s best to get any covered repairs done during the warranty period.
